This is such an adorable easy DIY that you’ll definitely use especially if you love to cook in your kitchen a lot. Not everyone can have a big outdoor garden so these DIY mason jar herb gardens are perfect for small spaces. What’s also great about these jar gardens is that you can have as many as you like.

What you’ll need to make a Mason Jar herb garden: If you have any big jars laying around the house those will work but if not I bought my jars at the 99 cent store for $1.99 each along with the rocks. I purchased my herbs and soil at Lowe’s and my chalk marker & chalkboard labels from Amazon.com.

Fill your rocks 1/4 of the jar so that when you water your herbs the water can drain through the soil to the rocks. Then add about about 1-2 cups of soil to jar or as needed depending on the size of your herb. Now remove your herbs from the plastic pot you bought them in and place in the jar. Pat the excess soil in and lightly water or spray. Then you add your chalkboard stickers and label each herb. Now you have an DIY herb garden you can sit in your window seal or in your kitchen.

Tips for caring for your herbs: Most herbs grow best in well-drained soil (hints the rocks in the jar) and develop their most intense flavor. Keep soil slightly moist, but not soggy. Fertilize once or twice a month with a liquid houseplant fertilizer. Every herb is different in the sense that some are tougher than others like rosemary will perform well in poor soil but basil is tricky! Do your best to water your basil plant at its base and not all over its leaves. Basil loves about 6 hours of sunlight as do most herbs.
